Chickpea Flour Hair & Face Mask

Chickpea flour, also called gram or besan, is a popular ingredient in many Indian beauty treatments.  This magical powder, the result of ground chickpeas, is yet another example of why you don’t need packaged beauty products with ingredients you can’t pronouce.  You might already have this and the rest of the ingredients lying around your kitchen.

The flour is packed with antioxidants, protein, zinc, iron, niacin & more.  All of which have beneficial properties for hair and skin.  You can use the flour as a mask for face or scalp or a mild skin exfoliant.  It can aid in treating a range of maladies including acne, dry skin, oily skin, hair loss and dry scalp.


The flour can be mixed with a myriad of different ingredients for different effects and treatments.  Some good add-ins are nut milks, eggs, yogurt, green tea, turmeric, lemon and olive or almond oil.  Get creative and experiment with what you like!  Chickpea flour provides a great base for so many beauty wins.


Try combining one or more of these with 1/2 – 1 cup chickpea flour to create a DIY spa treatment:

Nut milks- cooling, liquid base to create a paste (only need a tablespoon or so)

Yogurt – to create a thicker base and add more protein

Lemon – half a lemon for skin lightening and reduced pigmentation

Turmeric – for even complexion (may tint skin briefly)

Green tea – liquid base option for added antioxidants

Olive or Almond oil – for dry scalp
